A
pig-farming group has called for a director of Australian Pork Limited
to be stood down until charges of animal cruelty against him are heard
in court.
Neil Ferguson is due to appear in Midlands Magistrates Court in Western
Australia on July 1. He has been charged with being cruel to an animal,
namely a pig, which suffered harm that could have been alleviated by
the taking of reasonable steps under section 19(1) and 19(3)(h) of the
Animal Welfare Act 2002.

Pork industry can draw up its own organic standards
Tuesday, 17/03/2009
Australian Pork Limited says there's nothing stopping producers from creating their own organic and free-range standards.
The peak body will today appear at a Senate hearing into meat labelling and standards.
President of the Free Range Pork Farmers Association, Lee McCosker, has
called for a national free-range standard to protect consumers.
But APL general manager of policy, Kathleen Plowman, says there's "no
obstacle" for producer groups or associations to do it themselves, as
long as they have "robust" verification standards.
