Thinking of becoming a free range pig farmer or want to know more about how to grow the best free range pork? You are in the right place. There is a lot to learn about pigs if you want to be successful so we suggest you sign up for our free membership and get started!

Pigs are intelligent, social animals that form close bonds with their offspring and other pigs amongst their herd.  They are free range foragers by nature, instinctively know how to protect themselves from the elements, build nests to give birth in and are excellent communicators, IF, we give them the opportunity to express these natural behaviours. Learning how to make the most of these traits and to grow a marketable pig can be a little tricky but we are here to help.

Australian Free Range Pastured Pork Farmers does not show preference for any particular breed of pig, no matter how rare they may be perceived to be.  Our concern is for all pigs, not just the pork, and that when they are farmed free range, their welfare is put first.

The food we eat significantly impacts our health and well being. Because of growing concerns about nutrition and food safety, an increasing number of consumers are choosing to buy sustainable foods. Not only are sustainable foods more nutritious than heavily-processed industrial foods, they're also produced without creating the health hazards associated with factory farming.  This means that the demand for free range pork is growing and we aim to help our members meet that demand with pork that is indeed free range on pasture and that our pigs are managed with the welfare of both animals and the environment in mind.

This group supports its members by keeping them informed and sharing information and experiences.  Australian Free Range Pastured Pork Farmers represents the interests of free range pig farmers and lobbies for a better deal for small producers and presently, a legal definition for the term free range to protect our businesses, and in turn, the future of our pigs.

Pasture Raised Pork

If the image of pigs on pasture comes to mind when you think of free range pork, your only guarantee that the pigs have been raised on pasture is to purchase pork from a true free range producer.

Commercially raised pork is all "grain fed" instead of grass fed (the natural food for grazing animals). Grass fed pork contains a superior fat and far more Omega 3 fat than grain fed meat. Grain fed animals have extremely low amounts of Omega 3. An insufficient amount for human health.

Humane Choice is the only free range certification available that guarantees farm animals are given access to open pasture.
